The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced on Saturday, January 15, that the future Bangladesh Premier League (BPL 2022) will be contested behind closed doors. The competition is set to begin on Friday, January 15th, and the BCB
made the decision in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A fresh wave of the pandemic is impacting the Omicron strain of the COVID-19 virus, which has absorbed a number of countries and is registering a high number of cases per day. As a result, most matches, such as the South Africa-India trip, were played without spectators.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board recently allowed audiences in Dhaka and Chattogram when the Tigers played Pakistan in a bilateral Test and T20I series. However, they have opted not to jeopardise their flagship T20 event and have banned crowds for the whole BPL 2022 season.
According to the BPL's governing council secretary, Ismail Haider Mallick, supporters would not be present at the sites during the BPL due to government directives.
Mallick told the media that for the upcoming BPL, no visitors will be permitted inside the venue. He added that that's the government's instruction, and they are adhering to it.
Aside from that, because of the pandemic, the BPL 2022 will not feature the Decision Review System (DRS) technology because the board was unable to bring in technicians from abroad. A foreign and a local umpire will officiate the matches in the T20 competition.
Mallick commented that due to the pandemic, they are unable to use the DRS in BPL. The technicians can no longer fly. He stated that their two squads are now split between two countries, and they will be unable to travel to Bangladesh in this circumstance. Hawk-Eye Company is the world's only DRS provider. Because of the Omicron variant, not many are keen to participate in the event.
He added that there’s not much to discuss regarding DRS with the franchises. They did not get DRS and will notify them. He admitted that without DRS, the competition may lose part of its attraction, but there is nothing that can be done. He also said that they wanted the BPL to be at maximum capacity and they have received official approval as well, but everything changed thanks to Omicron.
The BPL 2022 will begin with a game between Chattogram Challengers and Fortune Barishal. Dhaka Platoon and Khulna Tigers will face off in the second game of the day.
